Scenics

When I find an old  house, I try to imagine what may have happened there- what families had occupied it, how they had lived, that sort of thing. Sometimes there is enough local lore to fill in the blanks, but when travelling through unknown territory, there is usually only your own imagination.

Sunrises and sunsets are amazing to photograph. And how handy they are, with one of each every day!

If you are fortunate enough to have a good patch of horizon and a decent camera, there's little to stop even the most amateur of photographers from getting something worth having as nature paints from her spectacular palette.

As with sunsets, bodies of water also provide rich views full of gradient colors, with mirror-like reflections on still water.

This particular area is a backwater from a large reservoir, and often offers up not only spectacular views like this one, but also lively groups of gulls, egrets, great blue herons and the like.

Fortunately, there is a wide berm where cars can pull off the road, allowing the photographer a chance to capture the fantastic array of colors, as nature prepares for a long winter's nap.

This house, (right), must have been something in its day, as indicated by all the fancy woodwork on the eves and porch roof. Unfortunately, it will need lots of work to restore it to the beauty it once displayed. And given the neighborhood, there appears little chance that will ever happen.

Once in the hands of a proud farmer, this old Oliver sported a dark green paint job with a bright yellow grill and vibrant red wheels. All that color has long since surrendered to the weather, replaced by the dull brown patina of rusted steel.

The two row planter behind it stands in stark contrast to the modern way of agriculture, in which a farmer now spends as much time at his computer as he does on his tractor.

Late in the winter a herd of a dozen deer gathers to glean what they can from last year's corn crop. The setting sun provides a rich, warm illumination, fitting for the scene.

Late in the Fall, this stretch of river is calm and reflective, offering beautiful scenes like this early morning shot. (Scanned 35mm film negative)
